From Calgary | Kananaskis Private Hiking Tour: The Foothills & Bragg Creek

7 hours

Discover the beauty of the Elbow Valley, Sheep River, and the movie set-like charm of Bragg Creek with this co-designed tour. Located just over half an hour from the city, this is the definitive local Rockies escape.

Introduction

This private journey takes you from the prairies of Calgary into the rolling foothills of the Rockies. Taking the scenic backroads west, venturing south of the busy Trans-Canada Highway, we venture towards the Elbow and Sheep River valleys. This landscape of golden meadows and rising swells offers a quieter, more intimate connection to the mountains than the well-trodden paths to Banff. While the major peaks draw the crowds, the Foothills are where many Calgary locals go to find space, silence, and the movie set-like charm of Bragg Creek along the Cowboy Trail.

This is a personalized, co-designed adventure, tailored to your group. To ensure the day matches your specific preferences, after booking you can either complete a 5-minute questionnaire or schedule a 20-minute call with our lead guide as part of our Discovery Process.

Crafting Your Personalized Itinerary:

What You’ll Experience:

  • A Landscape in Transition: We travel through a shifting mosaic of rolling parkland and steepening ridges, following the emerald curves of the Elbow and Sheep Rivers. This is where the wild Bluerock wilderness begins, framed by the stark, impressive profiles of Prairie Mountain and other Foothills summits.
  • MOLARI Active Immersion: Like all our mountain experiences, this day is based around active immersion to truly feel the beauty and power of our surroundings. This tour is built around a series of sights, landmarks, and trails to get us out of the van and moving.
  • Bragg Creek, Foothills Culture: Explore the artisan spirit of Bragg Creek, a quiet foothills village and outdoor enthusiast haven. A visit to the iconic town centre, with its rustic, movie set-like charm, feels like stepping back in time to a wholly different era of the West.
  • Premium Transit: Relax in the exclusive comfort of our vehicle while your guide handles all navigation, storytelling, and park logistics.
  • Lunch: We pause at a scenic vantage point for a fresh mid-day refuel. Field lunches are prepared by a local deli partner the morning of your tour (see FAQ for more details).

        What to Bring

          Clothing & Footwear:

          • Shoes: Comfortable hiking boots (recommended) or trail-appropriate walking shoes. Waterproof footwear is recommended.
          • Layers: Clothing fit for an active day, including adaptable layers. Weather in the Rockies is famously variable; being able to "layer up or down" is key to staying comfortable.
          • Pro Tip: Avoid Cotton. Cotton traps moisture and loses all insulating properties when damp, which can lead to rapid chilling. For your comfort and safety, we recommend moisture-wicking base layers made of merino wool or synthetic active-wear.

          Hydration & Personal Gear:

          • Water: Plenty of water for an active day. We provide chilled refills in the van - please bring your own reusable bottle(s).
          • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen (even in winter).
          • For Photos: A fully-charged camera or smartphone.
          • Specialized Gear: We provide hiking poles and microspikes/ice cleats - no need to bring your own unless you prefer them.

          For Winter:

          • The Essentials: Insulated gloves, thick wool socks, a warm toque/beanie, and additional warm layers.
          • Footwear: Insulated, waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended.
