From Banff/Canmore | Signature Kananaskis Private Hiking Tour: Into the Wild

8 hours

A private, co-designed adventure that takes you deeper into the rugged magnificence of Kananaskis Country. Our signature K-Country experience, this is typically the longest and most physically challenging of our 3 customizable Kananaskis-based tours.

Introduction

For this tour, your itinerary will be carefully crafted from dozens of world-class trails and Rockies landmarks across the five provincial parks within the Kananaskis Country system through which we'll pass between Canmore and Highway 40 towards Highwood Pass.

Taking the winding Spray Lakes Road and/or Highway 40 - the highest paved road in Canada, we access remote trailheads that lead to the very heart of the range. This is a day defined by scale and pristine nature, with an opportunity to loop in or out past the Spray Lakes tucked behind Canmore.

This is a personalized, co-designed adventure, tailored to your group. To ensure the day matches your specific preferences, after booking you can either complete a 5-minute questionnaire or schedule a 20-minute call with our lead guide as part of our Discovery Process.

Crafting Your Personalized Itinerary:

While our Ready-Made tours follow a signature, curated format, our Co-Design experiences are personalized to each individual group.

For this Kananaskis (Deep K-Country) Co-Designed tour, we use the toolkit below as a framework, working with you through our Discovery Process to tailor the adventure to your group's unique vision. This process defines the exact wheres, whens, and how-longs of your day in the wild.

The Highwood Passage (Highway 40)

Highway 40 is the highest paved road in Canada, a spectacular mountain corridor that bisects the Rockies. The road isn't just a transit route; it’s a destination in its own right and one of our favourite early summer bike rides. Single lane in each direction and much quieter than the main highway to Banff, the route offers panoramic peak views on both sides and frequent wildlife sightings.

Canyon Streams & Glacial Gateways

Options include: Troll Falls, Wedge Pond, Ribbon Creek, Barrier Lake, the 'Widowmaker'.

The Goal: To experience the power of the mountain water systems and canyons that form the gateway to the high peaks.

High-Alpine Lakes & Glacial Basins

Options include: Upper and Lower Kananaskis Lakes, Elbow Lake, Chester Lake, Rummel Lake.

The Goal: To delve deeper into the K-Country interior, where crystal-clear alpine lakes sit directly beneath towering limestone cathedrals away from the crowds.

Deeper into the Wild

Options include: Burstall Pass, Karst Spring, Prairie View Trail, and the high-elevation larch forests of the Spray Valley.

The Goal: Depending on group interests and fitness levels, on this tour we have the opportunity to get further off the beaten track compared to our others. Like all MOLARI mountain experiences, our day will be based around active immersion to truly feel the beauty and power of our surroundings.

What You’ll Experience:

  • Active Immersion: Like all MOLARI mountain experiences, our day in the wilderness is anchored in active discovery. Whether we are navigating the banks of Ribbon Creek, ducking through the trees to Troll Falls, or standing on the shores of Chester Lake, we ensure you are part of the landscape for a day, not just a spectator.
  • Mountains, Lakes & Rivers... A Journey Through Ecosystems: We traverse a vast range of environments, from the rushing 'Widowmaker' rapids to the vast, glacier-fed waters of Upper Kananaskis Lake, offering a sensory journey through the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies.
  • Premium Transit: Relax in the exclusive comfort of our vehicle while your guide handles all navigation, storytelling, and park logistics.
  • Lunch: We pause at a scenic vantage point for a fresh mid-day refuel. Field lunches are prepared by a local deli partner the morning of your tour (see FAQ for more details).

        What to Bring

          Clothing & Footwear:

          • Shoes: Comfortable hiking boots (recommended) or trail-appropriate walking shoes. Waterproof footwear is recommended.
          • Layers: Clothing fit for an active day, including adaptable layers. Weather in the Rockies is famously variable; being able to "layer up or down" is key to staying comfortable.
          • Pro Tip: Avoid Cotton. Cotton traps moisture and loses all insulating properties when damp, which can lead to rapid chilling. For your comfort and safety, we recommend moisture-wicking base layers made of merino wool or synthetic active-wear.

          Hydration & Personal Gear:

          • Water: Plenty of water for an active day. We provide chilled refills in the van - please bring your own reusable bottle(s).
          • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen (even in winter).
          • For Photos: A fully-charged camera or smartphone.
          • Specialized Gear: We provide hiking poles and microspikes/ice cleats - no need to bring your own unless you prefer them.

          For Winter:

          • The Essentials: Insulated gloves, thick wool socks, a warm toque/beanie, and additional warm layers.
          • Footwear: Insulated, waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended.
