Calgary Nature Loop Private Tour: The Urban Wild

6 hours

This ready-made tour loops through the river valleys and prairie vantages that make Calgary a world-class outdoor city. From skyline views to tranquil riverside trails, this is an intimate look at the "Wild Rose" country we call home.

Introduction

On this day tour of Alberta's biggest city, we escape downtown to explore the "Nature Loop": a series of hand-picked stops that showcase the harmony between our modern skyline and the rugged Alberta landscape.

While we have a signature route, the exact stops and timings can be adjusted to match your group’s specific interests, pace, and energy. With the convenience of pickup and drop-off at the location of your choosing, this is your day to soak up the best of Calgary and see why it is one of the fastest growing cities on the continent.

What to Expect (Itinerary):

  • Crescent Heights & McHugh Bluff: Start the morning with a panoramic "hero shot" of downtown Calgary and the Bow River from one of the city’s best northern vantage points.
  • Prince’s Island Park: A gentle walk through Calgary’s "urban oasis," just steps from the hustle and bustle of downtown.
  • Nose Hill Park: Step into one of North America’s largest municipal parks. Experience prairie-style vastness and look for local wildlife with the Rockies looming in the distance.
  • Lunch break - At around 1pm, we will break for a mid-day refuel at a scenic vantage point. This is a chance to pause, soak in the landscape, and discuss our next steps for the afternoon. Field lunches are picked up fresh from our local Calgary deli partner the morning of your tour (see FAQ for more details).
  • North Glenmore Park / Weaselhead Flats: Explore the delta where the Elbow River meets the Glenmore Reservoir. This is a true wilderness escape within city limits, featuring unique flora and birdwatching.
  • Bow River Pathway (Douglasdale) & Carburn Park: Experience the scale of our river pathway system with stops at two of its most stunning stretches in the south-east.
  • Scotsman’s Hill: Overlook the Stampede Grounds and the Red Mile for one of the city’s most stunning skyline vistas.
  • Optional Add-Ons: Choose to elevate your day with lunch at the Bow Valley Ranche in Fish Creek Park (meal expense not included), or step back in time with a visit to Heritage Park Historical Village (admission not included).

(Note: Choosing to include optional stops at Bow Valley Ranche or Heritage Park will provide a deeper look at our local history, but will naturally require adjustments to the rest of the itinerary to ensure a relaxed pace. Due to time constraints, guests typically choose either the Bow Valley Ranche lunch or the Heritage Park visit (or neither), rather than both.)

        What to Bring

          Clothing & Footwear:

          • Shoes: Comfortable, trail-appropriate walking shoes or hiking boots. (Waterproof footwear is recommended).
          • Layers: Clothing fit for an active day, including adaptable layers. Weather in Calgary and the Rockies is famously variable; being able to "layer up or down" is key to staying comfortable.
          • Pro Tip: Avoid Cotton. Cotton traps moisture and loses all insulating properties when damp, which can lead to rapid chilling. For your comfort and safety, we recommend moisture-wicking base layers made of merino wool or synthetic "active-wear".

          Hydration & Personal Gear:

          • Water: Plenty of water for an active day. We provide chilled refills in the van - please bring your own reusable bottle(s).
          • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen (even in winter).
          • For Photos: Your camera or smartphone.
          • Specialized Gear: We provide hiking poles and microspikes/ice cleats - no need to bring your own unless you prefer them.

          For Winter

          • The Essentials: Insulated gloves, thick wool socks, a warm toque/beanie, and additional warm layers.
          • Footwear: Insulated, waterproof walking shoes or hiking boots are strongly recommended.
