Small Group | Calgary Nature Loop: The Urban Wild

6 hours

This small group tour features a series of short walks, looping through the parks, river valleys and prairie vantages that make Calgary a bustling, world-class outdoor city.

Introduction

On this day tour of Alberta's biggest city, we escape downtown to explore the "Nature Loop": a series of hand-picked stops that showcase the harmony between our modern skyline and the rugged Alberta landscape. This tour features a series of short walks, looping through the parks, river valleys and prairie vantages that make Calgary a bustling, world-class outdoor city. Soak up the best of Calgary and see why it is one of the fastest growing cities on the continent with this small group experience, capped at 11 participants.

What to Expect - Itinerary & Experience:

  • Crescent Heights Lookout/McHugh Bluff: We begin with an iconic skyline vista from the Crescent Heights Lookout and McHugh Bluff, capturing the Bow River, downtown core, and distant Rockies to set the scene for the day.
  • Prince's Island Park: Access the park via the McHugh Bluff stairs to explore a forested urban oasis, where pathways and bridges wind through the heart of the city along the Bow River.
  • Nose Hill Park: Experience the massive scale of this natural highland - one of North America's largest urban parks. We'll walk through wild grasslands that offer 360-degree views of the city, mountains on the horizon, and airport off in the distance below. We'll keep an eye open for wildlife, with deer and coyote sightings common.
  • North Glenmore Park/Weaselhead Flats: Walk through the city’s only delta ecosystem to discover a hidden wilderness of spruce forests and oxbow wetlands, where you can spot diverse wildlife along the shores of the Glenmore Reservoir.
  • Fish Creek Provincial Park: Next we'll head to one of our favourite sections of the sprawling Bow River Pathway in the southeast of the city. We'll walk up a short incline to a spectacular view of the city, mountains and river park below. Fish Creek Provincial Park is one of Canada’s largest urban parks, a natural corridor known for its diverse birdlife and quiet canyon landscapes.
  • Carburn Park: On our way back to the city proper, we'll stop at Carburn Park for one of Calgary's best examples of city-meets-nature. Complete with lagoons, riverside trails, forest, wildlife, and its own "donut" ice rink and fire pits in winter, this is a year-round favourite with the locals.
  • Scotsman's Hill: One final skyline view from this historic ridge in the community of Ramsay. This elevated vantage point, which served as the original grandstand for the first Calgary Stampede, offers prime views of the river valley below, city front and centre, and the Rocky Mountains on the horizon.

Premium Transit: Between stops, relax in the comfort of our vehicle while your guide handles all navigation, storytelling, and logistics.

Lunch: We pause at a scenic vantage point for a midday picnic, providing a locally-sourced grazing spread of premium charcuterie, cheeses, and seasonal accompaniments (please check our FAQ for additional, important details).

        What to Bring

          Clothing & Footwear:

          • Shoes: Comfortable hiking boots (strongly recommended, especially in winter) or trail-appropriate walking shoes. Waterproof footwear is recommended.
          • Layers: Clothing fit for an active day, including adaptable layers. The weather in Calgary is famously variable; being able to "layer up or down" is key to staying comfortable.
          • Pro Tip: Avoid Cotton. Cotton traps moisture and loses all insulating properties when damp, which can lead to rapid chilling. For your comfort and safety, we recommend moisture-wicking base layers made of merino wool or synthetic active-wear.

          Hydration, Food & Personal Gear:

          • Backpack: Please bring a small daypack to store your layers, water, and gear. This ensures you're prepared for changing conditions while keeping your hands free.
          • Water: Plenty of water for an active day. We provide refills in the van - please bring your own reusable bottle(s).
          • Lunch and Snacks: We provide lunch (see FAQ for details), and a selection of light snacks is available in the van. However, we always recommend bringing along any personal favourites (like a specific energy bar or fruit) to keep your energy up throughout the day.
          • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen (even in winter).
          • For Photos & Devices: A fully-charged camera or smartphone, and a USB-A charging cable if available (USB-A charging ports are available in the van).
          • Specialized Gear: We provide hiking poles if desired and microspikes/ice cleats (if winter conditions) - no need to bring your own unless you prefer them.

          For Winter:

          • The Essentials: Insulated gloves, thick wool socks, a warm toque/beanie, moisture-wicking wool or synthetic base layers (upper and lower body; avoid cotton ), and additional warm layers (including a warm, weatherproof outer layer for wind/snow/rain protection).
          • Footwear: Insulated, waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended.
