Private From Calgary | Taste of Waterton Day Journey (Multi-Stop)

11 hours

Where the prairies meet the peaks: A thoughtful introduction to the dramatic landscapes, historic charm, and distinct feel of Waterton Lakes National Park.

Introduction

A stunning southward escape to one of the MOLARI team's favourites: Waterton Lakes National Park. With less than 15% of the annual visitation of Banff, this southern border delight is beyond beautiful and well worth the drive. Our curated sampler itinerary blends trail, canyon, and lake time with an opportunity to explore the townsite's charm – perfect for laying the foundations for a longer return visit in the future.

What to Expect - Itinerary & Experience:

Stop 1: Waterton Townsite & Cameron Falls

  • The Activity: Upon arrival into the townsite we visit Cameron Falls and stretch our legs with a gentle trail to orient ourselves and get a feel for the town and its beautiful surroundings: either the Townsite Loop (3.5km) or the Prince of Wales Loop (2.5km). You then have time to explore the beaches, boutiques, and other local shops at your own pace.
  • Duration: 1.5–2 hours.

Stop 2: Cameron Lake

  • The Activity: We'll then drive past the First Oil Well in Western Canada (a National Historic Site) on our way to Cameron Lake at the end of the Akamina Parkway. Known for frequent moose sightings, this serene lake's southern tip actually crosses the border into the United States.
  • Duration: ~20 mins.
  • Note – Alternative Option: if your group prefers to reduce time spent in the van, then the Cameron Lake stop can be skipped for more time enjoying the townsite, or a hike up the Bear's Hump trail (non-guided) which offers a fantastic view of the town and lakes from a higher vantage point.

Stop 3: Red Rock Canyon & Blakiston Falls

  • The Activity: Next we take the Red Rock Parkway to hike Red Rock Canyon Trail and Blakiston Falls Trail, at a combined length of 3.2km. The area boasts striking red and green bedrock, and the road itself – open only between May and October each year – is famed for its mountains-meet-prairies features, wildlife sightings, and abundant wildflowers.
  • Duration: 1 hour.

Stop 4: Bison Paddock Loop (Time & Season Permitting)

  • The Activity: Located near the park’s north entrance, this scenic driving loop offers a rare opportunity to view bison in their natural grassland habitat from the comfort of the van. As a protected area, this loop is strictly for vehicles, ensuring a safe and respectful viewing experience.
  • Duration: ~20 mins.

Premium Transit: Relax in the exclusive comfort of our vehicle while your guide handles all navigation, storytelling, and park logistics.

Lunch: We pause at a scenic vantage point for a midday picnic, providing a locally-sourced grazing spread of premium charcuterie, cheeses, and seasonal accompaniments (please check our FAQ for additional, important details).

        What to Bring

          Clothing & Footwear:

          • Shoes: Comfortable hiking boots (strongly recommended, especially in winter) or trail-appropriate walking shoes. Waterproof footwear is recommended.
          • Layers: Clothing fit for an active day, including adaptable layers. Weather in the Rockies is famously variable; being able to "layer up or down" is key to staying comfortable.
          • Pro Tip: Avoid Cotton. Cotton traps moisture and loses all insulating properties when damp, which can lead to rapid chilling. For your comfort and safety, we recommend moisture-wicking base layers made of merino wool or synthetic active-wear.

          Hydration, Food & Personal Gear:

          • Backpack: Please bring a small daypack to store your layers, water, and gear. This ensures you're prepared for changing conditions while keeping your hands free to use poles while we're hiking/walking.
          • Water: Plenty of water for an active day. We provide refills in the van - please bring your own reusable bottle(s).
          • Lunch and Snacks: We provide lunch (see FAQ for details), and a selection of light snacks is available in the van. However, we always recommend bringing along any personal favourites (like a specific energy bar or fruit) to keep your energy up throughout the day.
          • Sun Protection: Sunglasses, hat, and sunscreen (even in winter).
          • For Photos & Devices: A fully-charged camera or smartphone, and a USB-A charging cable if available (USB-A charging ports are available in the van).
          • Specialized Gear: We provide hiking poles and microspikes/ice cleats (if needed for winter conditions) - no need to bring your own unless you prefer them.

          If Winter Conditions:

          • The Essentials: Insulated gloves, thick wool socks, a warm toque/beanie, moisture-wicking wool or synthetic base layers (upper and lower body; avoid cotton ), and additional warm layers (including a warm, weatherproof outer layer for wind/snow/rain protection).
          • Footwear: Insulated, waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended.
